  • Are Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant positions available at MATE University?

    Yes. Qualified students may apply for TA or RA positions through their departments or research projects, depending on faculty needs and funding availability.

  • Can graduates stay in Hungary to work or continue their studies after completing their programmes?

    Yes. Graduates can apply for a 9-month "Job seeking" residence permit to seek employment or start further studies in Hungary.

  • Can I bring my family to Hungary while I study?

    No, unfortunately. With a residence permit for studies, it is no longer possible to bring a family member from home and apply for family unification. A third-country national holding or applying for a residence permit for the purpose of studies, a student mobility residence permit or a student mobility certificate shall not be granted a residence permit for the purpose of family reunification.   • Can international students work part-time during their studies?

    Yes. International students with a valid residence permit for studies and student mobility can work up to 30 hours per week during the semester and 90 days (or 66 working days) per year full-time.

  • Does the university help international students get a visa appointment?

    Partly yes. MATE’s international office provides guidance and supporting documents for the visa application and notifies the consulates and embassies about the names of MATE students.

    However, scheduling appointments with Hungarian embassies is the task for the applicants.

  • How diverse and inclusive is the university community?

    MATE welcomes students from more than 100 countries, creating a multicultural and inclusive learning environment. The university promotes diversity through international events, student organizations, and intercultural programs.

    For mental health and emotional well-being, MATE provides a free, English-language student counselling service that offers confidential psychological support.

  • How does the university support students’ research activities?

  • How much does it cost to stay in a MATE dormitory?

    Dormitory accommodation costs around 120–180 EUR per month, depending on the campus and room type. Prices are lower in rural campuses and slightly higher in Budapest.

  • Is Hungary a safe country?

    Yes, Hungary is generally considered a safe country for international students. It has a low level of violent crime, and most students feel comfortable using public transport, walking in city centres, and living in student areas.

    As with any country, it is important to take basic precautions (like keeping an eye on your belongings in busy places), but overall Hungary offers a calm and student-friendly environment. Universities are also supportive and provide help if you ever need assistance during your stay.

  • What are the average living costs in Hungary?

    The estimated monthly costs of living for a student is 700–900 EUR, including accommodation, food, transport, and personal expenses.

  • What dormitory facilities does MATE University offer, and how can I apply for a room?

    MATE provides well-equipped dormitories with shared kitchens, laundry rooms, Wi-Fi, and study areas. Students can apply for accommodation through the international office or online dormitory portal before the semester starts.

  • What facilities are available on the MATE campuses?

    MATE campuses offer libraries, computer labs, sports centers, research farms, botanical gardens, and student lounges. Each campus provides academic and recreational spaces to support both study and student life.

    Green areas, parks are ideal for going for a walk or relaxation and in a 5-minute walk distance from Szent István Campus, Gödöllő, the swimming pool of MATE GEAC is a modern and well-equipped facility, ideal for both recreational swimming and organized training in a friendly university sports environment.

  • What food services are available for students?

    All MATE campuses have canteens, cafeterias, and nearby restaurants offering affordable meals, including vegetarian and international options. Students sometimes receive discounts with a student ID card.

    You can also find halal food options in Hungary, especially in Budapest, where several halal grocery shops, butcheries, and Middle Eastern, Turkish, and Asian restaurants are available and commonly used by international students. Many students buy halal ingredients there and cook for themselves or eat at halal-certified restaurants in the city when visiting or on weekends.

  • What internship, co-op, or research opportunities are available for students?

    MATE offers internships, co-op placements, and research projects in collaboration with partner institutions, companies, and research centres. Students can apply through faculty coordinators or the university’s Career and Alumni Centre.

  • What is campus life like at MATE University?

  • What is the visa interview about, and do I need to show financial documents if I have a scholarship?

    The visa interview checks your study purpose, accommodation, insurance and financial background, as well as your level of English.

    If you have a full scholarship, financial proof may not be required depending on how much your monthly stipend is but bring your scholarship award letter and letter of acceptance as evidence. Check the relevant page of Study in Hungary website.

  • What resources does MATE offer for career development and job placement?

    The Career Centre provides career counselling, job fairs, CV workshops, and employer connections to help students prepare for the job market.

  • What should I do if I don’t get accommodation in a MATE dormitory?

    Useful links for finding accommodation in Budapest are listed below. Please note that the university does not manage these listings, nor can it guarantee availability. Students are solely responsible for handling contracts, reservations, and any related arrangements.

    The university accepts no liability for any financial or legal issues that may arise between students and accommodation providers. Please also be aware that these providers are popular among students from other universities as well, so competition for accommodation may exist.

  • What support do postgraduate students receive when seeking employment after graduation?

    The Career Centre and alumni network assist graduates with job placement, networking, and professional development programs. In addition, students receive guidance on CV writing, interview preparation, and career planning tailored to their field of study. Regular career events, workshops, and employer meetings further help graduates connect with potential employers and build successful careers.

  • What transport options and student discounts are available?

    Students enjoy 50% discounts on public transport across Hungary and 90% discount between their place of studies and accommodation. Budapest and other cities have excellent metro, bus, and tram systems, and intercity travel is easy by train or coach.
