Working in Hungary

  • Are Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant positions available at MATE University?

    Yes. Qualified students may apply for TA or RA positions through their departments or research projects, depending on faculty needs and funding availability.

  • Can graduates stay in Hungary to work or continue their studies after completing their programmes?

    Yes. Graduates can apply for a 9-month "Job seeking" residence permit to seek employment or start further studies in Hungary.

  • Can I bring my family to Hungary while I study?

    No, unfortunately. With a residence permit for studies, it is no longer possible to bring a family member from home and apply for family unification. A third-country national holding or applying for a residence permit for the purpose of studies, a student mobility residence permit or a student mobility certificate shall not be granted a residence permit for the purpose of family reunification.   • Can international students work part-time during their studies?

    Yes. International students with a valid residence permit for studies and student mobility can work up to 30 hours per week during the semester and 90 days (or 66 working days) per year full-time.

  • Does the university help international students get a visa appointment?

    Partly yes. MATE’s international office provides guidance and supporting documents for the visa application and notifies the consulates and embassies about the names of MATE students.

    However, scheduling appointments with Hungarian embassies is the task for the applicants.

  • How does the university support students’ research activities?

    MATE provides access to modern labs, research grants, conferences, and faculty mentorship. Doctoral and master’s students can join research groups and publish in university journals. Check the University's relevant website for further details.

  • Is Hungary a safe country?

    Yes, Hungary is generally considered a safe country for international students. It has a low level of violent crime, and most students feel comfortable using public transport, walking in city centres, and living in student areas.

    As with any country, it is important to take basic precautions (like keeping an eye on your belongings in busy places), but overall Hungary offers a calm and student-friendly environment. Universities are also supportive and provide help if you ever need assistance during your stay.

  • What are the average living costs in Hungary?

    The estimated monthly costs of living for a student is 700–900 EUR, including accommodation, food, transport, and personal expenses.

    • Dormitory: approx. 150 EUR/month
    • Private flat in Budapest: from 300 EUR/month

  • What internship, co-op, or research opportunities are available for students?

    MATE offers internships, co-op placements, and research projects in collaboration with partner institutions, companies, and research centres. Students can apply through faculty coordinators or the university’s Career and Alumni Centre.

  • What is the visa interview about, and do I need to show financial documents if I have a scholarship?

    The visa interview checks your study purpose, accommodation, insurance and financial background, as well as your level of English.

    If you have a full scholarship, financial proof may not be required depending on how much your monthly stipend is but bring your scholarship award letter and letter of acceptance as evidence. Check the relevant page of Study in Hungary website.

  • What resources does MATE offer for career development and job placement?

    The Career Centre provides career counselling, job fairs, CV workshops, and employer connections to help students prepare for the job market.

  • What support do postgraduate students receive when seeking employment after graduation?

    The Career Centre and alumni network assist graduates with job placement, networking, and professional development programs. In addition, students receive guidance on CV writing, interview preparation, and career planning tailored to their field of study. Regular career events, workshops, and employer meetings further help graduates connect with potential employers and build successful careers.
