  • Can graduates stay in Hungary to work or continue their studies after completing their programmes?

    Yes. Graduates can apply for a 9-month "Job seeking" residence permit to seek employment or start further studies in Hungary.

  • Can I bring my family to Hungary while I study?

    No, unfortunately. With a residence permit for studies, it is no longer possible to bring a family member from home and apply for family unification. A third-country national holding or applying for a residence permit for the purpose of studies, a student mobility residence permit or a student mobility certificate shall not be granted a residence permit for the purpose of family reunification.   • Does the university help international students get a visa appointment?

    Partly yes. MATE’s international office provides guidance and supporting documents for the visa application and notifies the consulates and embassies about the names of MATE students.

    However, scheduling appointments with Hungarian embassies is the task for the applicants.

  • Is Hungary a safe country?

    Yes, Hungary is generally considered a safe country for international students. It has a low level of violent crime, and most students feel comfortable using public transport, walking in city centres, and living in student areas.

    As with any country, it is important to take basic precautions (like keeping an eye on your belongings in busy places), but overall Hungary offers a calm and student-friendly environment. Universities are also supportive and provide help if you ever need assistance during your stay.

  • Is there an age limit for applicants?

    There is no age limit for self-financing students. Age limits may be specified by scholarship types. Also, please, note that those who are under 18 need their parents' to arrange enrolment and visa procedures.

  • What are the average living costs in Hungary?

    The estimated monthly costs of living for a student is 700–900 EUR, including accommodation, food, transport, and personal expenses.
    Typical costs:

    • Dormitory: approx. 150 EUR/month
    • Private flat in Budapest: from 300 EUR/month

  • What internship, co-op, or research opportunities are available for students?

    MATE offers internships, co-op placements, and research projects in collaboration with partner institutions, companies, and research centres. Students can apply through faculty coordinators or the university’s Career and Alumni Centre.

  • What is the visa interview about, and do I need to show financial documents if I have a scholarship?

    The visa interview checks your study purpose, accommodation, insurance and financial background, as well as your level of English.

    If you have a full scholarship, financial proof may not be required depending on how much your monthly stipend is but bring your scholarship award letter and letter of acceptance as evidence. Check the relevant page of Study in Hungary website.

  • What level of English do I need to study at MATE University? What are the accepted English proficiency tests necessary for the application process?

    You can find the list of acceptable English language certificates on the university’s official website.

    If the language of instruction in your previous studies was English, you may submit either:

    • a certificate issued by your institution confirming that your studies were conducted in English, or
    • your diploma or transcript, clearly stating that the medium of instruction was English.

    During the visa interview, the applicant’s language proficiency is assessed, and the result significantly influences the decision-making process.
