Can I apply for a second Master’s degree under Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) programme?
You may apply for a second Master’s degree under the Stipendium Hungaricum programme only if your first Master’s degree was not completed within the SH framework. If you obtained your Master’s degree under the SH programme, you are eligible to apply only for the next study cycle (PhD).
Can I apply for more than one programme?
Yes, as a self-financing applicant, you may apply for more than one programme; however, a separate application fee must be paid for each programme you submit.
Under Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) scholarship, applicants are allowed to apply for up to two programmes, while under Scholarship for Christian Young People (SCYP) scheme, applicants may apply for only one programme.
Can I change my programme after admission?
Changing the program is possible only from the second semester indicating your intention in the first semester as specified by financial status:

Can I submit one general motivation letter instead of separate letters for each university?
No, you should prepare a tailored motivation letter for each university. Admission committees expect content that reflects their programs, values, and your reasons for choosing them.
Can I transfer to MATE University from another university?
Yes, transfer from other universities is definitely possible.

Can my recommendation letters come from both academic and professional referees?
Yes, most programs accept a combination of academic and professional recommendation letters, particularly for graduate-level applications.
However, some programs may have specific preferences or requirements. We recommend checking the program’s admission criteria to be sure.
Can self-financing students apply for any scholarships?
Some scholarships and financial aid options may be available for self-financing students, depending on the programme and eligibility criteria. We recommend checking the specific details under each scholarship programme listed on our Scholarships page.
Do I need to upload a health certificate? What is the required format of the health certificate for scholarship applicants?
For the application process, a health certificate is not required.
Stipendium Hungaricum and Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship applicants only need to present the official medical certificate (with attachments) after being awarded the scholarship and upon arrival in Hungary, during the local medical examination (using the prescribed form).
SCYP applicants must upload the required medical certificate to their application profile by 30 April, using the official template available in the call for applications, once the church recommendation has been approved.
Self-financing students are not required to submit a health certificate.
Does MATE University offer scholarships for international students?

How can I check if I’m eligible for an MSc or MA programme?

If your previous studies are closely related to your chosen programme but some courses are missing based on MATE curriculum, you may be allowed to take the necessary BSc/BA subjects during your first year, depending on the decision of the programme lead.
How do I apply as an international student?
To apply as an international student, start by visiting our online application page and carefully follow the step-by-step instructions for your chosen BSc or MSc program. You will need to upload
- your academic documents,
- language certificate (if required),
- a copy of your passport.
Then, pay the application fee to submit your form.
After that, you may be invited to an online interview or asked to take an entrance examination, depending on the program you apply for. I’m looking for a supervisor for my PhD studies. What should I do?
You can identify a potential PhD supervisor in the following ways:
- Contact the scientific secretary or international coordinator of your chosen doctoral school, who can provide guidance on available supervisors and research areas.
- Search the national database of announced PhD research topics, where you can explore research fields and contact potential supervisors directly.
If you are unable to find a suitable supervisor or need further assistance, please contact the Doctoral and Habilitation Office directly.
Is it possible to submit missing documents after the application portal is closed?
You can submit specific missing documents until the deadline given in the specific scholarship call or in the self-financing application procedure.
Is there an age limit for applicants?
There is no age limit for self-financing students. Age limits may be specified by scholarship types. Also, please, note that those who are under 18 need their parents' to arrange enrolment and visa procedures.
Is there an entrance exam for admission? How can I prepare for it?
Yes, an entrance exam is required for admission.
Applicants should review the relevant program syllabus and prepare to discuss their motivation during the interview, as this is a key focus of the assessment.
It is also important to revise core subjects related to the chosen program.
In addition, PhD applicants must demonstrate strong knowledge of their selected research field, particularly in terms of research methodology.
Is there any nationality limitation for the MISP scholarship?
No, there is not any nationality limitation for MISP.
Is tuition fee paid per semester or for the full academic year?
Payment of the first annual tuition fee is required in order to receive the Letter of Acceptance. After enrollment, tuition fees may be paid on a semester-by-semester basis.
What are the next steps if my offer is conditional?
You must fulfil the conditions stated in your offer (e.g., submitting missing documents, proof of language proficiency, or final transcripts) by the deadline. Failure to meet conditions usually results in withdrawal of the offer.
What is the refund policy if my application or my visa gets rejected?
The application fee paid via DreamApply for foreign applicants applying to a self-financed program through the institutional admission procedure is intended to cover the costs of the admission process and is non-refundable.
If a foreign applicant is admitted through the institutional admission procedure, but applicant does not receive a visa for entry into Hungary, the prepaid tuition fee for two semesters may be refunded after deducting a 10% administrative fee from the first semester’s tuition fee.

What level of English do I need to study at MATE University? What are the accepted English proficiency tests necessary for the application process?
