  • Can I apply for a second Master’s degree under Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) programme?

    You may apply for a second Master’s degree under the Stipendium Hungaricum programme only if your first Master’s degree was not completed within the SH framework. If you obtained your Master’s degree under the SH programme, you are eligible to apply only for the next study cycle (PhD).

  • Can I apply for more than one programme?

    Yes, as a self-financing applicant, you may apply for more than one programme; however, a separate application fee must be paid for each programme you submit.

    Under Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) scholarship, applicants are allowed to apply for up to two programmes, while under Scholarship for Christian Young People (SCYP) scheme, applicants may apply for only one programme.

  • How can I apply for a PhD programme?

    To find a potential supervisor, you may

    • contact the scientific secretary or international coordinator of the respective doctoral school or
    • browse research topics on the official Hungarian doctoral website where you can select a topic and contact the supervising professor directly.

  • How can I check if I’m eligible for an MSc or MA programme?

    Each programme description includes details about the required academic background. You can find information about available programmes here and view the curricula to get more details.

    If your previous studies are closely related to your chosen programme but some courses are missing based on MATE curriculum, you may be allowed to take the necessary BSc/BA subjects during your first year, depending on the decision of the programme lead.

  • Is there an entrance exam for admission? How can I prepare for it?

    Yes, an entrance exam is required for admission.

    Applicants should review the relevant program syllabus and prepare to discuss their motivation during the interview, as this is a key focus of the assessment.

    It is also important to revise core subjects related to the chosen program.

    In addition, PhD applicants must demonstrate strong knowledge of their selected research field, particularly in terms of research methodology.

  • What is the average class size for Master’s programmes, and how accessible are professors?

    The average class size for Master’s programmes is typically 5–15 students, allowing for a more interactive and personalized learning experience.

    Professors are generally accessible via email and are open to academic consultations. In addition, the secretaries of the respective institutes can provide administrative support and help students communicate with academic staff when needed.

  • What level of English do I need to study at MATE University? What are the accepted English proficiency tests necessary for the application process?

    If the language of instruction in your previous studies was English, you may submit either:

    • a certificate issued by your institution confirming that your studies were conducted in English, or
    • your diploma or transcript, clearly stating that the medium of instruction was English.
