Strengthening Futures in Agriculture: FAO Workshop and Alumni event in Budapest

On 19–20 February 2026, students of the FAO–Hungarian Scholarship Programme participated in a two-day professional event in Budapest, jointly organised by the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia and the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture.

The programme opened on 19 February with a full-day workshop at the FAO Regional Office, where first-year scholarship holders gained an in-depth overview of FAO’s mandate, regional activities, and priority areas, including sustainable food systems, rural development, animal health, aquaculture, and climate-related natural resource management.

The workshop combined expert presentations, an exhibition marking FAO’s 80th anniversary, and an interactive group exercise focused on project proposal formulation, offering participants practical insight into FAO’s work and career opportunities. On 20 February, the programme continued with a FAO Scholar and Alumni Meeting, which was officially opened by Oszkár Ökrös dr., Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture of Hungary, and Ms Mary Kenny, Food Safety and Consumer Protection Officer at the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia. The event provided a valuable platform for current scholars and alumni to network, exchange experiences, and strengthen professional connections within the FAO scholarship community.

The two-day programme contributed to the professional development of participating students and reinforced cooperation between FAO, the Ministry of Agriculture, and partner higher education institutions, including the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE).
