The Deák Tibor College for Advanced Studies was founded in 2013 by a group of motivated students who sought to create new opportunities for professional development, scientific engagement, and community life for students of food science. Their initiative evolved into the first student organisation at the Institute of Food Science and Technology dedicated specifically to extracurricular professional activities and the cultivation of an active academic community.
The College is named after Professor Tibor Deák, an outstanding educator and researcher in the field of food microbiology, who served as Head of Department, Dean, and later Rector. His professional commitment, academic achievements, and dedication to students continue to serve as an inspiring example for our community. The College aims to encourage its members to become open-minded, responsible, and professionally credible young experts who contribute to the advancement of food science, the food industry, and society as a whole.
Our primary objective is to complement university education with practical knowledge and experiences that extend beyond the standard curriculum. We organise professional lectures, round-table discussions, courses, study trips, company and factory visits, conference participation, and research-related programmes. Through these activities, members have the opportunity to engage with researchers, industry professionals, decision-makers, and other experts while gaining a deeper understanding of the scientific, technological, economic, and regulatory challenges currently shaping the food sector.
Industrial visits are a particularly important component of our activities. They enable students to observe food-processing technologies and quality-management practices in real operating environments and to connect theoretical knowledge with industrial practice. In recent years, our members have visited companies representing various sectors of the food industry, including meat processing, confectionery, beverage production, and coffee processing. We also organise programmes focusing on emerging topics such as food innovation, sustainability, alternative proteins, food quality, and food authenticity.
The College welcomes students at different stages of their university studies who are interested in food science and willing to take an active role in professional and community activities. Members can participate in the organisation of events, research projects, study trips, and conferences while becoming part of a supportive and engaged student community. For this reason, team-building events and informal programmes are just as important to us as professional development.
Our long-term goal is to support our members in entering the labour market as well-prepared graduates equipped with practical experience, professional networks, a broad perspective, and a strong sense of social responsibility. We believe that the knowledge, experience, and relationships gained through participation in the College contribute not only to individual career development but also to the future advancement of the food sector and the wider community.
