Conditions of Residence in Hungary for Research Purposes

Necessary documents/conditions required for a research permit extension from the University:

  • hosting agreement and the letter of commitment, signed by the Rector
  • contract for personal service on research tasks, signed by a representative of the Institute concerned
  • Accreditation certificate - MATE is an accredited and registered research institute

MATE procedure BEFORE starting the application at the Immigration Office:
To establish any employment-related legal relationship (including assignment contracts), applicants have to contact their Institute first.
An HR approval form must be submitted by the Institute prior to initiating the signing procedure. The Institute clarifies contractual details and obtain the necessary approvals. The HR Directorate is responsible for the coordination of all such procedures, and documents may only be submitted for signature after managerial approval.
Please note that in the case of a gratuitous (“zero-value”) assignment contract, no social security insurance is established, and the individual will not be entitled to TAJ-based healthcare services.

An abridged summary:
Residence permits for the purpose of research may be issued to a third-country national who
•    wishes to reside in Hungary on the basis of a hosting agreement with an accredited research organisation for the purpose of carrying out scientific research, and
•    for whom the research organisation has undertaken in writing to reimburse the costs incurred in connection with the expulsion of the researcher in the event of his/her stay exceeding the duration of the authorised stay, if the researcher does not have the necessary financial resources.

The residence permit may be renewed only if
•    the applicant holds a valid residence permit at the time of application,
•    the applicant has resided in Hungary for at least 90 days in any 180-day period with his/her residence permit.

The application must be submitted no later than 15 days before the expiry of the residence permit.
If the case has been initiated via Enter Hungary, Appendix 9.11 has to be attached, too. This is generated by the system after data entry on the electronic interface.

  • No need to fill it in ink
  • No need for a signature
  • Check it and correct the possible mistakes after printing it - if correction is necessary, scan the corrected hard copy and upload it as "other document".

Other mandatory attachments:
(1) Documents proving means of subsistence in Hungary
One of the following:
•    certificate of income from the applicant’s employer and/or from the tax authority from the previous year
•    employer and/or tax authority certificate of regular income from abroad,
•    a certificate from a credit institution in the name of the applicant (e.g. bank statement, savings, securities, account balance).
(2) Documents proving accommodation in Hungary
(3) Documents proving health insurance
Without having social security entitlement, the applicant will need to arrange private insurance. Check insurance options here.
The applicant must prove that he/she has comprehensive health insurance.

Documents proving the conditions for departure:
•    a valid passport,
•    a valid ticket or the amount thereof.
The procedural fee is currently 26.000 HUF.
After electronic submission, the client must undergo biometrics within 15 days. Booking an appointment is not mandatory.
